FAQs - Conferences & Meetings

General:

What is the theme of the 2012 International Conference of Europeanists?
The theme of the 2012 conference is diversity in Europe, broadly defined. The Conference Program Committee is particularly interested in having participants reflect on and explore the variety of diversities within Europe: political, administrative, legal, geographic, economic, social, cultural, intellectual, and identitarian. How do these differences operate as sources of conflict, of exciting ideas, of growth, or of misunderstanding? To what extent does thinking about Europe’s diversities enhance our understanding of Europe as a whole?

What kind of scholarship does the Conference look to highlight?
The Council embraces high-quality scholarship reflecting a variety of viewpoints, and encourages submissions from a wide range of disciplines (political science, sociology, history, economics, literature, etc.) and interdisciplinary fields (cultural studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, etc.).

What format do the sessions take?
The conference convenes a variety of panel formats including roundtable discussions, panel presentations, and book panels. We accept submissions for panels in any of these formats and encourage innovation.  The most typical session is a paper panel, consisting of four paper presenters, one chair and one discussant.

Submissions:

Where do I go to submit a proposal?
You may submit proposals through the Council for European Studies' conference proposal website between August 15, 2011 and October 7, 2011.

I have previously submitted a paper using the Council's conference submission website. May I use my old login information, or do I have to create a new account?
If you submitted a paper last year, you may use the same login information to access the Council's conference submission website. If you have forgotten your login or password information from last year, please click here to retrieve it from the section which provides login instructions.

What types of proposals may I submit for the CES conference?
You may submit proposals for individual paper presentations, panels and book panels. Also, the Conference Committee welcomes the creation of "mini-symposiums," consisting of four panels on a related theme. Please note that each panel proposal must include abstracts for all individual papers, as well as a general description, a chair and a discussant.

What length should my proposal abstract be?
Please keep proposal abstracts to no more than 250 words.

Should I send a copy of my paper with the proposal?
No. The Conference Committee receives a great number of submissions and therefore requests that applicants send abstracts, not full papers.

May I submit more than one proposal?
Yes. You may submit more than one proposal and participate in more than one panel, particularly as a discussant or chair. However, the Conference Committee discourages attendees from endeavoring to present more than two papers each.

Do I have to become a CES member in order to submit my proposal for the Conference?
No. As a complimentary gesture, the Council for European Studies confers membership on all fee-paying conference registrants as part of the conference registration package. However, there is no additional membership fee imposed on those who wish to attend the conference. The fee for individuals who wish to become members, but do not wish to register for the CES conference is $100 for professionals and $75 for students. For more information, see the "Members" page of this website.

When will I know if my paper has been accepted?
If your proposal has been accepted for inclusion in the 2012 program, you will be notified on or before December 10, 2011.
